The PeopleThe people are a mixture of African and European. The official language is Portuguese, but Creole, based on Portuguese, is the language used by Cape Verdeans and even this can differ from island to island. More recently English has been taught in schools. The religion of the Islands is largely Christian, with most people being Catholic. Dining OutIn the main towns you will find a good selection of restaurants offering different choices of cuisine including local Creole and Portuguese specialties and most restaurants will have live, Cape Verdean music, at least one evening a week. The smaller islands will not have the same choice of restaurants. There may be little choice on the menu with the only option being what they have decided to cook that day. However, they will want to do their best to please you, but they won't be in a terrific hurry, so don't be surprised at slow service, just relax and enjoy the atmosphere and the surroundings. For a three course meal, expect to pay around £10 - £15 each including wine. What to DoWhilst it is easy to while away a week lazing on a white sand beach, there is much to see and do. Excursions can provide the opportunity to find out more about the island on which you are staying or take you to explore one of the other islands. Activities include: water sports, horse riding, walking and fishing.
