SERVICEService levels may not be up to the standard experienced in more established destinations. In particular, service in restaurants can be slow. HEALTHThe standards of hygiene may differ from those in the UK so please take care with your choice of food and drinks as changes to diet can cause stomach upsets. GETTING AROUNDTaxis are readily available in the larger towns and are generally of a good standard. Although they work on a meter (a guide to fares would be £3 for a 2-3 mile journey), they can, at times be 'creative' so it is always worth checking what the fare will be before setting off. The most inexpensive way of getting around are the 'aluguers', easily identified and which drive around town picking up passengers. Often overloaded with people and packages, you simply shout when you want to get off. Watch the time, as generally aluguers do not operate after about 4.30pm.
